Providing children a safe
and nurturing learn through
play environment.

About Us

Southside Mothers’ Day Out (SSMDO) is a non-profit daycare program, specializing in part-time care (children can attend 2 days or less per week) with a focus to meet the community needs for quality part-time care. We are proud to offer a program that has been serving Edmonton families since 1976.

Our enriching program offers children the opportunity to become more independent and develop self-confidence; expand their learning through play; develop relationships with other children and express their thoughts, feelings and ideas in a fun and happy environment.

Parent Involvement

SSMDO is a parent co-operative requiring participation from all parents. This includes participation at three general meetings per year; one cleaning bee per child per year per day they attend; and one parent task from a variety of positions; and one casino shift per family during a casino year.

Teacher/Child Ratio

At SSMDO we can have a maximum total of 28 children per day. This includes up to 12 toddlers (19-35 months) and up to 16 preschoolers (3-5 years) in a segregated age setting.

SSMDO has a minimum of four paid staff members, 2 in each room, plus a Program Director who oversees the operation of the program. In addition, for the better part of the fall and winter term we often host a student from the early childhood education program of Grant MacEwan University’s Early Learning and Childcare Diploma program doing field work placements.

Facility

We are located in the lower level of a Strathcona-area church. We have two bright sunny rooms for playing and snacks, plus a comfortable separate sleeping room for naptimes. Our area includes a child-friendly bathroom and extra sinks. We have direct access to a fenced playground with child-safe play equipment and sandbox (for our private use only). During poor weather we play in the gymnasium located on site.
